Square Meal’s Best Restaurants in the UK 2015 has been announced today, with The Freemasons taking 68th place. The list is compiled using votes from its annual survey, last conducted in May and June 2015. Thousands of readers and bloggers took part and the results were moderated by the Square Meal editor and his nationwide team of professional reviewers. The survey does not ask for or include any restaurants in London. Here’s the full list of Square Meal’s Best Restaurants in the UK.
And here’s what Square Meal had to say about The Freemasons;
“Tucked away up a secret snicket in picture-pretty Wiswell, this atmospheric and stylishly recast Lancashire inn now cuts quite a dash with its thoughtful blend of rich heritage colours, mismatched antique furniture and country prints, while young informed service and a bold, contemporary menu belie the traditional surroundings. Local lad Steven Smith is on blistering form in the kitchen, delivering “sheer fine-dining class” rather than needlessly gussied-up pub grub in a raft of perfectly conceived modern dishes. He is also justly renowned for his creative use of seasonal produce, as in ‘barely touched’ XL diver scallops with summer greens, a soup of Manx queenies and roast shellfish oil or Goosnargh duck roasted with lavender and honey alongside fennel, peach and yakitori livers on toast. Those with simpler tastes might veer towards simply grilled fish and slabs of 35-day aged beef with duck-fat chips, while desserts hit the heights with show-stopping soufflés and delectable creations such as vanilla slice with Gariguette strawberries, honeycomb and salted-caramel ice cream. The food is matched by an impressively diverse and authoritative wine list loaded with classy bottles at very reasonable prices.”
